Steady Steps: Our Fall Prevention Programme
Steady Steps™ is our structured fall prevention programme at In Step Physical Therapy. Rather than treating balance problems in isolation, it works through a staged progression built around your own assessment.
How the programme runs:
- Falls-risk and balance assessment — a registered physiotherapist evaluates posture, core strength, hip mobility, gait and the factors raising your risk of falling.
- Personalised strength and balance programme — a four-stage progression: supported balance work, unsupported balance, dynamic multi-limb coordination, then functional exercises tied to daily activities. You move at your own pace.
- Confidence and mobility training — practising the movements that feel least secure, so walking, stairs and rising from a chair become steadier.
Suitability is determined at assessment. If a medical cause for balance changes is suspected, we will say so and recommend you speak with your physician.
Initial Assessment and Personalized Planning
Comprehensive Fall Risk Assessment Physiotherapy
Before we begin any intervention, we take time to understand your complete picture. Our initial fall risk assessment physiotherapy includes:
- Review of medical and fall history
- Assessment of muscle strength, joint stability, and flexibility
- Balance, gait, and coordination testing using clinical tools
- Home or environment hazard screening (for in-home sessions)
- Vision and cognitive function screening as relevant
Tools we may use during assessment include:
- Functional Reach Test
- Postural stability analysis tools
- Observation-based movement analysis
These help our physiotherapists tailor the most effective plan for reducing your fall risk.
Individualized Fall Prevention Plans
Once we understand your unique challenges, we design a customized treatment plan that may include:
- Fall prevention exercises physiotherapy: Targeted routines for strength, endurance, flexibility, and coordination.

- Proprioceptive training: Techniques to sharpen your body’s ability to feel its position and movement are crucial for coordination.
- Functional task simulations: Rehearsing real-life movements like getting out of bed, turning quickly, or navigating stairs.
- Balance Improvement: Enhancing balance through exercises that challenge the body’s equilibrium in a safe, controlled environment.
- Strength Training: Focusing on strengthening key muscle groups that support posture and stability, such as the core, legs, and hips.
- Flexibility Routines: Maintaining or improving flexibility to prevent stiffness, which can impact movement and balance.
- Gait Training: Analyzing and improving walking patterns to reduce trip and fall risks.
