Physiotherapy Delivered Where Residents Live
In Step Physical Therapy provides physiotherapy on-site at long-term care homes and seniors’ residences across Edmonton. Our registered physiotherapists attend the facility, so residents are assessed and treated in familiar surroundings without the difficulty of arranging transport to a clinic.
We work alongside facility staff and, where appropriate, family members, so that a resident’s programme fits the routines and supports already in place.
Who In-Facility Physiotherapy Is For
This service may suit residents who:
- find travelling to a clinic difficult or tiring
- are recovering after a hospital stay, surgery or a fall
- are working on mobility, transfers or walking distance
- have balance or dizziness concerns affecting daily activity
- are living with a neurological condition such as stroke or Parkinson’s
- need an assessment for equipment, seating or mobility aids
Suitability is determined on assessment. Not every presentation is appropriate for physiotherapy, and we will say so where that is the case.
What an In-Facility Visit Involves
A first visit usually includes:
- a discussion of the resident’s history, current concerns and goals
- assessment of mobility, strength, balance and transfers
- review of any mobility aids or equipment currently in use
- a treatment plan agreed with the resident and, where appropriate, family or facility staff
Follow-up visits focus on carrying out that plan. This may involve exercise progression, gait and transfer practice, manual therapy, education for staff and family, and recommendations about equipment or the environment.
Working With Facility Staff
Residents are supported by nursing and care staff every day, so a physiotherapy programme only works if it fits what happens between visits. Where the facility and the resident agree, we share exercise programmes, transfer guidance and mobility recommendations with the care team, and document our findings for the resident’s records.
Conditions We Commonly See
Residents are often referred to us for:
- reduced mobility and walking tolerance
- balance difficulties and falls history
- post-surgical rehabilitation, including joint replacement
- stroke and other neurological conditions
- arthritis and general deconditioning
- pain affecting daily function
Coverage and Billing
Coverage for physiotherapy in a facility setting depends on the resident’s insurance plan and circumstances. Some extended health plans include physiotherapy, and direct billing may be available depending on the insurer. We are happy to explain what applies before treatment begins so there are no surprises.
You can read more on our insurance and coverage page.
Arranging a Visit
Enquiries can come from a resident, a family member, or the facility itself. Contact us and we will discuss the resident’s situation, what physiotherapy could involve, and how scheduling would work with the facility.
For physiotherapy delivered in a private home rather than a facility, see our in-home physiotherapy service.
Frequently Asked Questions
We attend long-term care homes and seniors residences across Edmonton and the surrounding area. Contact us with the facility name and we will confirm whether we can attend.
A referral is not required to see a physiotherapist in Alberta. Some insurance plans ask for one before they will reimburse, so it is worth checking the plan.
Yes. Family members are welcome to attend, and it often helps when the programme involves support between visits.
Frequency depends on the resident goals and response to treatment. This is discussed at the initial assessment and reviewed as things progress.
Sessions are rescheduled. We ask facilities and families to let us know in advance where possible.
